| Fly to Tsavo, reknown for its large herds of 'red' elephants and maneless lions (whose man-eating ways in late 1800s almost halted building of Kenya-Uganda ‘lunatic express’ railway line). Tsavo is a vast expanse of savanna bush and semi desert scrub, acacia woodlands; belts of riverine vegetation and palm thickets. There are rocky outcrops, ridges and volcanic lava flows and ash cones including Shetani lava flow. At Mzima Springs, filtered underground water gushes from below a lava ridge into clear pools. Other game iinclude giraffe, hippo, zebra, crocodiles, buffalo, plains game and prolific birdlife. |
